Join us to conserve SJ County

If we don't act now, our whole county will be paved over.

Swainson's hawk by Kasey FoleySan Joaquin County, one of the richest agricultural areas in the world, has been habitat for an amazing range of wild birds, fish, animals and plants.

Now the Great Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, seasonal home to millions of migratory birds, may be dying. Urban sprawl is taking over farmland in the central county, with its foraging grounds and habitat corridors along creeks and rivers for wild animals that thrived there. Vernal pool grasslands in the foothills, where wild flowers found nowhere else once bloomed, are giving way to poorly planned development.

Many parcels of habitat land remain in San Joaquin County, and that's where the Waldo Holt Wildlife Conservancy comes in. Our goal is to preserve as much wildlife habitat as we can, through acquisition, or working in other ways with farmers and with other landowners, and with conservation organizations.

In December 2009, we took title to the 8.5 acre Armstrong Preserve on the Mokelumne, donated by Patricia Armstrong to preserve for the wild plants, birds and critters. The San Joaquin County Council of Governments will manage it - at a very reasonable cost, since it's adjacent to their preserve across the river.

Waldo Holt, our friend and inspiration died shortly after our first meeting. We are only a few of the hundreds of people who admired Waldo's selfless work on behalf of the non-human residents of our county.

2011 Waldo Music Festival

Saturday, September 10, 3-8 pm

We had to postpone the 4th annual Waldo Music Festival this summer because of unseasonable storms. Well, we've rescheduled for Saturday, September 10. Time and location are the same, and we'll have just as much fun as we would have had in June, only we won't get wet!

The annual Waldo Music Festival honors the work of local naturalist Waldo Holt, and raises money for protection of wildlife habitat in San Joaquin County. Your $20 admission fee includes a full afternoon of music, food and drink, and the opportunity to participate in a silent auction of art and wine. Children are welcome, and are admitted free with parent or other adult.

Mark your calendars, tell your friends, and join us for the 4th Annual Waldo Music Festival Saturday, September 10, 3 - 8 pm at 3536 Rainier Avenue on the banks of the Calaveras River.
